The Late-Blooming Rose

The late-blooming rose is always best
for its flower is full 'til the winter rains.
Then its petals stain the ground with a brilliant red
and the early rose is long dead—its beauty spent.
Only a scraggy and thorny bush remains
to remind you of what it once was.
